Marilyn Haywood - Mama's baby (Ain't a baby no more)

Marilyn Haywood - Mama's baby (Ain't a baby no more)
Silver Fox [SF 22 A - 1970]

The history of Memphis based Silver Fox starts when Lelan Rogers, who was running at the time the Texan SSS International Artists label (with the 13th Floor Elevators among others), joins forces with Shelby Singleton, the man who took over Sun Records from Sam Phillips, to release a few soul singles. The adventure lasted from 1968 to 1970. Only two years, time enough to record some amazing tunes, like this Mama's baby, wich is not a surprise as they had singers like Bettye Lavette and Laura Greene on the bill. Some of this songs are compiled on a record called "My Goodness, yes! Silver Fox Soul Collection".

As we said before, Marilyn Haywood was one of the great singers Silver Fox had working for them. She recorded "Action speaks louder than words", wich can be found on the compilation of the name from Vampisoul, and this powerful single you are listening to now. She also was a background vocalist for Eddie Harris, the great Bo Diddley and Ahmad Jamal.

....................................................................................

Larry Lawrence - See me

Larry Lawrence - See me
Clandisc [CLA ... 2 - 1970]

This is a record with a bit of mistery and confusion... Apparently, there's a mistake in the label crediting Larry Lawrence as the singer. As far as I could find, Earl George a.k.a. George Faith should be the name written on it. In fact, it seems that Larry Lawrence wasn't a singer himself, he licensed music from various producers and owned a few labels like Ethnic, Ethnic Fight and Larry's.

To add to the confusion, I cannot find the reference number for the record that is normally displayed in the label (this is the flip side to "Eternally" by The Dynamites). Not only that, but this tune is also on CLA 215 with King Stitt - Sound of the 70s on the other side.

Clandisc was the label Trojan Records gave Clancy Eccles to produce his own material from 1969 to 1972. He released about 40 singles and a couple of albums, using The Dynamites as the studio band.

I hope you enjoy this tune, whoever is singing, and the nice female chorus that takes on progressively as the song is driven by the early reggae rhythm of the fabulous Dynamites.

....................................................................................

Earl George a.k.a.

Ray Barretto - Soul drummers

Ray Barretto - Soul drummers
Disc Jockey (France) [116.501 A - 1969]

It's been a long time since my last update, and what a better way to restart this than with a mega-classic musical bomb like "Soul drummers".

Ray Barretto (R.I.P., New York 1929 - New Jersey 2006) and the Fania All Stars play a frenetic song full of percussion, trumpets and claping hands to make anyone dance in the best Nu Yorican Boogaloo tradition, mixing soul and other black rhythms with a Latin flavour. The flip side of the single is "Mercy, mercy baby", both from the well known lp "Acid".

....................................................................................

Joe's All Stars - Hey Jude

Joe's All Stars - Hey Jude
Joe [DU 24 A - 1969]

“…the people would listen to the Beatles original and then dance to the reggae version" Joe Mansano.

And here it is the Reggae version, by the Joe's All Stars a.k.a. Rico & The Rudies. This was one of the first releases on the Joe label, created by Trojan Records to allow Mansano to produce his own material (tahnks for that!!) The first series of the label are the green ones and shared the matrix reference with Duke (DU). Then, Trojan decided to give Joe its matrix and a new design came with it.

As we said before, The Joe´s All Stars were the same studio band than The Rudies, with Rico Rodriguez playing trombone, and under both names they recorded some of the best Reggae instrumentals, and a few DJ cuts with the voice of Hopeton Reid, who also used names such as Joe the Boss, Pama Dice, and Dice the Boss.

....................................................................................

Joe Mansano

Errol Dixon - Morning train

Errol Dixon - Morning train
Island [WI 017 B - 1962]

When I first listened to this record I immediately thought about Rock n' Roll, not only because of the fast piano or the way the sax is played and how it takes part in the song, but also the way Dixon sings. And when I started the research about this Jamaican born singer and pianist, it turned out I wasn´t too wrong on my appreciation, as he considers himself and is seen by many of his fans as a bluesman, who also recorded some Ska, like this one you can listen to.

Dixon moved to New York when he was twelve with his family, and is there where he started to receive all the influences from the Black American music of the time. In the mid 50´s, he launched his career in London, wich continues nowadays as far as I know.

I found a short but interesting interview searching on the internet. I hope you enjoy it, as well as the record itself!:

....................................................................................

George Semper Rhythm Committee - It's your thing

George Semper Rhythm Committee
Rama Rama Records [RR 7799 A - 1970]

George Semper (1942-2009) was a California based hammond player, producer, arranger and agent. From 1969, he also owned Inner City Records, releasing soul and early funk. Most of the releases were covers, such as this "It's your thing" by the Isley Brothers (1969), being this one of many versions that followed the original, with a sound that personally reminds to the Mohawks. On the other side of the single we can find "Don't be afraid", a killer vocal tune.

Semper always requested ownership of the masters that he wrote and played on, something unfortunately not very usual those days.

Jackie Wilson - Helpless

Jackie Wilson - Helpless
MCA [MU 1105 A - 1969]

He was one the greatest in Doo-wop, Rhythm & Blues and Soul, but before he collapsed because of a heart attack on stage in 1975 to spend the last 9 years of his life suffering from a coma, "Mr. Excitement" also had time for Funk. On this tune you can check it out by yourself, accompanied by a terrific band, probably The Funk Brothers (the band used in Motown). In 1966, Wilson's producer, Carl Davis, decided not to use New York musicians anymore, and managed to get The Funk Brothers to record for him, and also Chicago-based session players.

This single was also released on the Brunswick label (55418)

Slim Smith - Slipaway

Slim Smith - Slipaway
Unity [UN 520 (1) - 1969]

Slipaway is a good soul song by Clarence Carter in the Atlantic label (I´m not sure if this was the original), but here we have an improved and faster early reggae cover produced by Bunny Lee on Unity, one of many subsidiaries of Pama Records. Slim Smith had one of the most soulful voices in Jamaican music, always trying to emulate his idol, Curtis Mayfiled, and here is a good example of it singing over the same rhythm as, for example, Dave Barker's "Prisoner of love" wich was released after this one under Lee Perry's production.

Slim Smith was born in 1948 and died in tragic circumstances in 1973, when he was only 25. He started his career on Duke Reid's Treasure Isle label performing solo and then with The Techniques, to continue recording a few songs for Byron Lee. In 1965 he formed The Uniques, starting their work mainly with Coxsone Dodd and Prince Buster. Around 1967, The Uniques changed producer and put themselves in the hands of Bunny Lee, who will be the one to continue recording with when Slim Smith decides to go back to his solo career until his death.

....................................................................................

Soul Tops - Rain and thunder

Soul Tops - Rain and thunder
Nu Beat [NB 002 A - 1968]

The Soul Tops were the alter ego of the Three Tops, also known as The Treetops. This vocal trio was formed by Dion (or Dionne Cameron), Orville (Oswald) Robinson and Joe Riley. This tune is a good example of rocksteady vocals, heavily influenced by American Soul (Temptations, Four Tops,..), with the added curiosity of the storm effects during the song. The single was released in 1968 on the Pama subsidiary Nu Beat, and contains "Swing baby swing" on the other side, making it a good double sider.
