Punch, one of many labels from Pama Records, is sign of heavy early Reggae. And this cover of the classic gospel song is just a proof of that. The voice of Norman Washington is accompanied by a marvelous chorus and some final hand clapping that drives the song to a climax, leaving us begging for a bit more...

Norman Washington recorded a few songs with Punch, where The Upsetters and Dave Barker recorded some of their singles, and also Gas and the main Pama label. Some of these tunes are more soul orientated, like "Same thing all over" on Pama, wich is compiled in the very interesting Black is Soul volumes, edited by Wah Wah Records.

As an anecdote, or a freak note, the fist in the Punch logo is smashing a late 1969 chart list.

Norman Washington grabó unas cuantas canciones con Punch, donde gente como los Upsetters o o Dave Barker editaron sacaron algunos de sus singles; así como Gas y Pama. Algunos de esos temas están más orientados al soul, como "Same thing all over" en Pama, recopilada en los interesantísimos volúmenes de "Black is Soul", editados por Wah Wah Records, de Barcelona.

Como anécdota, o nota friki, el puño que aparece en el logo de Punch está aplastando una lista de éxitos de finales de 1969.

Gloria Jones was born in Cincinnati, but soon moved to Los Angeles, where, after being in the same band as Billy Preston and Frankie Kharl (The Cogic Singers), started a solo career on Uptown Records, subsidiary of EMI/Capitol. She recorded, among others, this brilliant single and the very well known "Tainted love", wich was not only covered by Soft Cell in the 80's, but also, and before that,a classic in the English Northern Soul scene. "Tainted love" and "Heartbeat" were written and produced by Ed Cobb, who was better known for his work with bands like The Standells and The Chocolate Watch Band.

Jones had a relationship with Marc Bolan, and even played keyboards for his band, T. Rex. I'd like to add that this fantastic singer is not a one-hit wonder, as many might think. As an example, this fast and catchy "Heartbeat", that got me since the first time I heard it and came in the form of a present not long ago. Thanks!! :)

Gloria Jones nació en Cincinnati, pero ya de pequeña se mudó a Los Ángeles, donde, tras coincidir en la misma banda con Billy Preston y Frankie Kharl (The Cogic Singers), comenzó su carrera en solitario en Uptown Records, subsidiaria de EMI/Capitol. En este sello grabó este single y la conocidísima (tras la versión de Soft Cell en los 80) "Tainted love", que antes había sido un clásico en la escena Northern Soul en Inglaterra. Ambas canciones fueron escritas y producidas por Ed Cobb, quien en ese momento era más conocido y reconocido por sus trabajos con bandas como The Standells o Chocolate Watch Band.

Jones mantuvo una relación sentimental con el líder de T. Rex, Marc Bolan, e incluso tocaba los teclados. Me gustaría añadir que, a pesar de lo que se pueda pensar, no estamos ante una artista que haya hecho tan sólo una canción interesante y nada más. Valga como ejemplo "Heartbeat", canción que me enganchó desde la primera vez que la oí y que no hace mucho llegó a mis manos en forma de regalo muy especial. ¡Gracias, guapa!
