Wilson Pickett

Wilson Pickett (March 18, 1941 – January 19, 2006) is one of the biggest names in Soul music, a name everyone recognises instantly.
He grew up singing in Baptist church choirs in Alabama, where he lived with his Mum. In 1955 he moved to Detroit with his father, escaping from a tortured childhood. He joined Gospel chorus The Violinaires, touring around the country. Then he decided to move to The Falcons in 1959, one of the first groups to bring Gospel into a more popular context, paving the way to Soul music.
After a quite succesful hit with The Falcons (I found a love), Pickett went solo and recorded "I'm gonna cry" and "If you need me". The latter was sent to Atlantic and ended up in the hands of Solomon Burke, who re-recorded the song and made #2 in the R&B charts and #37 in the pop charts. Pickett was devastated after that.
In the following years, he made it into the charts a few times, with huge hits like "Mustang Sally", wich is the A side of the single you are listening to now, and even no1's like "In the midnight hour" and "Land of 1.000 dances", both in Atlantic and Stax.
Wilson Pickett died after a troubled life in 2006 in Virginia and is buried in Louisville, Kentucky,
where he lived for a while with his mum. He left us a handful of good songs, soul classics that are part of music history.

Wilson Pickett (18 Marzo 1941 - 19 Enero 2006) es uno de los grandes nombres del Soul, reconocido al instante por cualquiera.
Pickett creció con su madre en Alabama, donde cantaba en coros de la iglesia Baptista. En 1955 se trasladó a Detroit con su padre, escapando así de una niñez un tanto tortuosa. Allí se unió al coro Gospel "The Violinaires", con los que giró por todo el país, hasta que decidió abandonarlos para comenzar con The Falcons en 1959. Éste fue uno de los primeros grupos en llevar el Gospel a un contexto más popular, allanando el camino para la llegada del Soul.
The Falcons obtuvieron cierto éxito con el tema "I found a love", pero el bueno de Wilson decidió probar suerte en solitario grabando "I'm gonna cry" y "If you need me". Ésta última canción llegó a Atlantic Records, donde cayó en manos de Solomon Burke, quien no se cortó un pelo a la hora de regrabarla. La versión de Burke llegó al número 2 en las listas de R&b y al 37 en las de Pop.
Tras ver su trabajo explotado por otro, llegaría el momento de resarcirse en los años posteriores con varios éxitos, tales como "Mustang Sally" (cara A del single qe estás escuchando), o "In the Midnight hour" y "Land of 1.000 dances" en Atlantic y Stax, con los que alcanzó el número 1.
En 2006, Pickett muere en Virginia, siendo enterrado en Louisville (Kentucky), dejando un puñado de buenas canciones, clásicos del Soul que son parte de la historia de la música.
